Pediatric Eye Care: Why Is It Important?

As a parent, it is important to determine early if your child may suffer from vision problems. It is helpful to have your child’s first eye examination early. Studies suggest that up to 10% of preschoolers and 25% of school-aged kids have vision issues. It is therefore essential to detect the first signs of vision problems, as they can cause permanent vision loss if left untreated.

The Importance of Pediatric Eye Care

Your children need to have regular eye exams whether or not they show signs of visual problems. They may seem problem-free now, but issues can actually develop with age.

According to the World health Organization (WHO), comprehensive eye exam should be given to infants at 6 months of age. Additional eye exams should be scheduled at age 3 and just before they enter the first grade. School-aged children, on the other hand, have to undergo an eye exam every two years if they don’t need vision correction. Those required to have eyeglasses or contact lenses should take an eye exam annually, or as recommended by a specialist.
